Liberty’s Leen Weijers joined the opening panel at the 2025 Unconventional Resources Technology Conference (URTeC) in Houston. The session, titled “Shaping the Future: Leveraging Technology Innovation and Championing Sustainable Development in Unconventional Resources,” brought together leaders from across the industry:

  • Dan Pickering – Pickering Energy Partners

  • Thaimar Ramirez – Midland Basin Business Unit, OXY

  • George Koperna – Advanced Resources International (ARI)

The panel was moderated by Ali Sloan of Core Geologic.

Below are a few key points made during the panel session:

  • George Koperna explained, some of the technology that drove the start of the shale revolution was first developed with R&D money following the Arab Oil embargo in 1973. That investment has gone a long way for dividends toward U.S. energy independence.
  • More recently, the industry has gone beyond the momentum for cost reduction. Thaimar Ramirez with Occidental highlighted reuse of produced water for fracturing and other purposes that make us better neighbors.
  • Dan Pickering assessed that the US unconventional industry will likely face some headwinds as price-sensitive barrels may be temporarily pushed out of the market by relatively price-insensitive barrels. It is a blessing and a curse that US barrels are responsive and relatively easy to add or remove from market.
  • But remember, there is always a silver lining. While cheaper barrels may not be as desirable for us in the short term, our industry always adapts and improves through the cycle. Lower oil prices are great for consumers; expand use of our products toward more people who really need it; make the energy we produce more competitive with other energy sources; and, extend the future runway for oil and gas.

Mike Brady, Vice President of Power Generation Execution at Liberty Power Innovations, recently participated in the Bisnow DICE National, a premier three-day summit focused on the future of digital infrastructure.

Brady spoke on a panel titled “Mission Critical – Solving the Data Centers Power Problem” alongside industry leaders:

  • David Bell, VoltaGrid

  • Will McCausland, PowerHouse Data Centers | AREP

  • Jennifer Ruch, Oracle

  • Scott Worley, Stabilis Solutions

The panel was moderated by Toyebi Adedipe of Hitachi Energy.

As the data center industry experiences unprecedented growth, energy consumption is projected to double by 2030. The panel explored the urgent need for increased power capacity—at larger scales and with faster time-to-compute. Traditionally, data centers have depended on grid-based power, which has been challenged by the speed of power growth from generation to transmission. The discussion asked a timely question: Are we at a turning point where newer, onsite energy solutions are ready to take the lead?

Brady contributed Liberty’s perspective on how innovative, scalable power systems can help meet the sector’s evolving demands, particularly as speed, reliability, and sustainability become critical to data center operations.

A few key points he shared:

  • He emphasized his opinion that private industry is likely better equipped to handle the rapidly changing load variability challenges of AI than the traditional grid.

  • He noted that the desire for control over power delivery isn’t new. For decades, firms have considered investing in their own power, but the capital cost was often too steep compared to simply paying more for grid power. Today, companies like Liberty—and the colleagues Brady joined on stage—are willing to make those long-term investments on behalf of clients.

  • The panel also discussed the push for more renewable power. Brady pointed out that natural gas serves as a strong bridge to a long-term renewable buildout and can either transition to a backup role or remain as primary power, depending on the application.

Liberty Energy Launches Bettering Human Lives Foundation to Advance Clean Cooking Solutions

Liberty Energy (NYSE: LBRT), a leading North American energy services company, is proud to announce the establishment of the Bettering Human Lives Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting clean cooking solutions and improving the well-being of communities worldwide. The launch of the Bettering Human Lives Foundation (BHL Foundation) complements the company’s initiatives focused on alleviating poverty.

The mission of the Bettering Human Lives Foundation is rooted in the conviction that clean cooking has the power to transform lives. Currently, one-third of the global population relies on open fires or polluting stoves for meal preparation, contributing to poor health and premature deaths, and hindering human potential. This issue is urgent, and the foundation is committed to increasing access to clean cooking fuels.

The Bettering Human Lives Foundation aims to achieve its mission by directly supporting innovators and entrepreneurs in Africa and Asia, enabling them to establish and expand their businesses in the clean cooking sector. By fostering solutions at the grassroots level, the foundation seeks to empower communities and provide families with a viable pathway out of poverty through access to modern, clean energy.

Under the dynamic leadership of Executive Director Anne Hyre, the Bettering Human Lives Foundation benefits from a wealth of experience. With over 30 years of dedicated service in public health across Africa and Asia, Anne will play a pivotal role in steering the foundation’s clean cooking initiatives toward creating a lasting and positive impact on communities.

Liberty Energy has made an initial commitment of $1 million and is confident that the foundation will raise significant funds from others inside and outside our industry given the immense impact on human lives and opportunities provided by access to clean cooking fuels. Chris Wright, Founder and CEO of Liberty Energy, expressed the company’s dedication to making a positive impact: “We believe that access to clean cooking fuels is the largest single step in the emergence from dire poverty. Through the Bettering Human Lives Foundation, we are committed to supporting local initiatives that bring about lasting change and contribute to the well-being of individuals and families.”

The foundation’s initiatives will include financial support, mentorship programs, and partnerships with local organizations to advance clean cooking solutions. Liberty Energy invites collaboration from like-minded entities, philanthropists, and individuals who share the vision of a world where everyone cooks over clean-burning stoves, leading to improved health, economic prosperity, and a brighter future.

Letter from Anne Hyre, Executive Director of Bettering Human Lives Foundation

Despite significant cultural and geographical differences amongst countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, the scenes outside the window, as I drive from town to town, are remarkably similar, and all include women and girls standing in lines at water pumps, walking in groups in search of firewood and cow dung, and carrying heavy loads of firewood and water-filled buckets. Whether in Malawi, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, or Kenya, I pass clusters of homes and see women cooking amidst harmful smoke from open fires that are fueled by wood or cow dung.  We are in the year 2023… how is this acceptable? I feel so disheartened that the daily lives of women and girls in many lower-income countries continue to be filled with tedious, physically demanding, and often dangerous tasks of collecting fuel and water for cooking, cleaning, laundry, and heating homes.

I am a nurse-midwife, and I have spent the past 30 years working to improve poor-quality health services for women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. For 25 years, I worked primarily in Southeast Asia, where access to energy and sustained economic growth contributed to visible progress in improving health and quality of life. For the past 5 years, my work has shifted to Sub-Saharan Africa, and I have encountered a very different reality. Governments and donors have made huge investments in health over decades, and yet most countries in Sub-Saharan Africa remain far from reaching global targets for development in any social sector, including maternal and newborn health. I continually ask myself, “How can a woman possibly enjoy a healthy pregnancy, access health services, and demand better quality services when she spends her time collecting firewood, cooking over polluting stoves, and missing out on education and revenue-generating activities that ultimately translate into her ability to make decisions and take action to improve her family’s well-being?” Better health services are essential, but far from sufficient. There is a great need to tackle more fundamental problems that perpetually constrain women and their families.

A clean-burning cookstove, such as those powered by Liquified Petroleum Gas can be a life-changer for families, particularly women and girls. It liberates them from the drudgery of collecting fuel and cooking in smoke-filled spaces, affording them time for school or other income-generating activities. It immediately improves their health, safety, and quality of life. The Bettering Human Lives Foundation will mobilize financial and human resources to support LPG and cookstove entrepreneurs and innovators in Africa and Asia with one goal in mind: get a clean cookstove into 1 million households. As a midwife and a mother, my heart breaks when I see a postpartum mother and her newborns inside dark, smoke-filled homes. I am eager to get on a more impactful path toward bettering human lives.

Onwards and Upwards,

This weekend the WSJ wrote an article on some of my efforts to communicate to the public about energy and climate change, and LinkedIn’s censorship, then reversal of that censorship decision.  I am pleased that the WSJ wrote a piece about my education efforts as it draws attention to these critical issues.

Unfortunately, they titled the article “Energy CEO Fights Climate Science…”  Quite the opposite, my goal is to make big-picture learnings from climate science more accessible to the public and put them in context with the appropriate tradeoffs regarding energy affordability, reliability, and security.

Presumably, the “fights climate science” comes from the fact that an IPCC author said I should be censored for stating false conclusions.  Except my comments stating that hurricanes, tornadoes, droughts, or floods were not increasing in frequency or magnitude was correct.  The data backing that up is referenced in the Bettering Human Lives report released in August last year.  In the WSJ article, the authority quoted to rebut me only spoke about one, ONE of the claims I made: drought.  The IPCC does say that soil moisture deficits are increasing, a factor impacted by human activities like farming.  The IPCC does NOT say that meteorological or hydrological droughts are increasing.  I have no desire to censor the quoted IPCC author, but he has his facts wrong in this case.

Professor Roger Pielke Jr., perhaps the world’s foremost scholar on extreme weather trends, has written extensively on this topic.  Here is one of his pieces on the IPCC’s work on extreme weather:

Here is another on the 2022 year in review:

Below are several links covering many more issues:  What the Media Won’t Tell You About . . .

Engage with Pielke Jr.’s writings if you want to garner a deeper understanding of extreme weather data and the gross mishandling of this issue, unfortunately, illustrated in this WSJ piece.

Disappointing that the journal would find someone unable to get it right on droughts — one tiny topic in my broad 12-minute video — to justify a headline that I “fight(s) climate science.”

My goal is to short-circuit the media, activists, and politicians who thrive on frightening, alarmist climate pronouncements that are often at odds with the facts.  In Liberty’s Bettering Human Lives report, I wrote a 12-page long section on climate change and climate economics along with an extensive list of references for the dialogue.  Far from “fighting it,” I want to spread a basic understanding of climate change so that we can engage in a more sober conversation around the unavoidable tradeoffs that must be made on climate goals, our energy system, and poverty abatement.

I thank the journal for writing this piece and stirring dialogue on these critical topics👍
