But the discussions surrounding the negative impacts of the energy industry are \u201cfar from reality,\u201d according to Chris Wright, CEO of Liberty Oilfield Services and strong advocate of the industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone has been disappointed with the dialogue around energy,\u201d Wright said. \u201cI\u2019ve been an energy nerd since I was a kid. Energy is complicated, but critical.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the last five years have gotten so far away from reality,\u201d he continued, \u201cthat it is alarming and disturbing and, quite frankly, damaging.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In an exclusive interview, Wright told Hart Energy\u2019s Faiza Rizvi that there has been a lot of dialogue around the negative impacts of the oil and gas industry, which are \u201creal and should be acknowledged.\u201d However, he also stressed the need to understand the benefits of the oil and gas industry and how plentiful and affordable energy is absolutely critical across several industries including health care and transportation.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>Jump to a topic:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Liberty\u2019s first-ever ESG report\u00a0<strong>(0:33)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Effective ESG reporting<strong>\u00a0(2:55)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>North Face campaign\u00a0<strong>(8:57)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Future trends of ESG<strong>\u00a0(22:02)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>\u201cIf you look at the bigger picture, our industry causes a dime of damage to the world and a dollar of benefit,\u201d he said. \u201cThe benefits versus the costs are enormously larger.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In June, Liberty Oilfield Services\u00a0released its inaugural ESG report titled \u201cBettering Human Lives,\u201d\u00a0providing\u00a0a comprehensive review of the relationship between energy, poverty and climate change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt Liberty, we tried to do our little part based on numbers and facts, put a little more perspective around the oil and gas industry\u2026We always talk about the dime of damage, but [in the report]\u00a0we have evaluated both sides of the story to make better decisions,\u201d Wright said of the report.<\/p>\n<p>For example, in early June, Wright and his team launched a campaign targeting outdoor industry stalwart The North Face after it\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hartenergy.com\/exclusives\/why-innovexs-ceo-spoke-about-north-faces-stance-oil-and-gas-191386\">refused to fulfill an order of making co-branded jackets for Innovex<\/a>\u00a0because it\u2019s an oil and gas company. The campaign, in which Wright thanked North Face for being a \u201cvaluable customer of the oil and gas industry,\u201d went viral and Wright was applauded for taking a stand for the fossil fuel industry.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the campaign, Wright\u00a0said he saw it\u00a0as an opportunity to communicate about the critical role of oil and gas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe outdoor industry is entirely enabled by oil and gas,\u201d he explained.\u00a0\u201cNorth Face makes great gear and I\u2019ve been a fan of North Face for a long time but just going with the trend of saying \u2018oil and gas is bad because our customers need to hear this\u2019\u2014we need to change that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Further, Wright went through North Face\u2019s website of wide-ranging products and said he failed to find a single product that wasn\u2019t made out of oil and gas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, for North Face to come out and say \u2018we\u2019re not going to make jackets for an oil and gas company because we are against the oil and gas industry\u2019 is like bees shunning honey\u2026everything they do is simply impossible without oil and gas,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Listen to the entire interview here.
